Home Opener

That Yankees hat was probably David’s favorite hat. His goddaughter Sofia is now the rightful owner of it. David didn’t actually like baseball. We would be invited to games throughout the season, and David’s favorite reply was “Tentative”: You could put a baseball game on the map ahead of time, with six months to a year’s notice, and David would always reply “Tentative.”

So while he pretended to be a Yankees fan, he actually would go out of his way to NOT go to a game. I asked him about it, and he would never really articulate why, outside of, “It’s long, and you sit outside.” I personally don’t think he was all about sitting around and drinking beers, being forced into those long conversations you tend to have while watching the innings pass by.

He was also that kind of guy who, if the subway was more than ten minutes, he would rather pass than be bothered.

That was David.

But that hat always defined him—it was one of those signature things.

He actually liked the Knicks. I bought him a Knicks hat, and I found it in the trunk of his car.

Oh well.
